“The Indispensable Teacher in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.”
Educator and AI collaboration discussed at NIS

The second roundtable meeting, “The Indispensable Teacher in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” brought together more than 1,000 educators.

How will artificial intelligence affect education? Will the teacher’s role in the learning process change? How will cooperation in the tandem of teacher and AI be built? Answers to these and other urgent questions Kazakhstani teachers received from the domestic and foreign experts.

Foreign scientists shared their thoughts about the place of the artificial intelligence in education. The future in the age of AI and prospects for cooperation between artificial intelligence and teachers was analyzed by David Marsh, Director of Innovation and External Relations of EduCluster group of the University of Jyväskylä from Finland. Amandeep Singh Gill, project director of the International Partnership for Digital Health and Artificial Intelligence, connected from Switzerland and devoted his speech to the role of the teacher in the new reality.

Kulyash Shamshidinova, Chairman of the Board of Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools AEO, speaking about the priority opportunities and prospects for teachers in the era of AI, emphasized that artificial intelligence must work for the benefit of children. What can and what cannot be controlled by AI, how is its implementation in the educational process, can artificial intelligence solve creative tasks – the answers to the most pressing questions sounded in the speech of Kulyash Nogatayevna.

Deputy Chairman of the Board Svetlana Ispusinova began with an address to teachers – “Are you ready to teach the future?” – and analyzed what key skills teachers need in the era of artificial intelligence.
The teachers of intellectual and general education schools who joined the round table were interested in the NIS experts’ opinion on the role of an educator in the era of AI. Dinara Beisembayeva, a chemistry teacher at Nur-Sultan Intellectual School, the ambassador of the Global Teacher Prize in Kazakhstan, the winner of the National Prize “Teacher of Kazakhstan – 2020”, presented how artificial intelligence is used in pedagogical practice today. Venera Musarova, Director of the Department of Human Resource Management, assessed the level of preparation of today’s teachers for change, and Rustam Abilov, Director of the Department for the Development of Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools, focused on the features of extracurricular and non-formal education.

The teacher of physics at the specialized lyceum-lyceum of information technologies of Kostanay city Jahangir Gapparov answered the question, which currently worries most teachers – how to keep the balance between modern information technologies and traditional education.

The staff of the Center for Pedagogical Skills prepared and provided the participants of the round table with the list of relevant materials on Artificial Intelligence. The list includes more than a hundred titles, among them various literature and videos.

The collective conclusion of all participants of the round table was voiced by Kulyash Shamshidinova:

– A century ago the famous British chess player William Arthur Ward said: “The average teacher tells. The good teacher explains. A very good teacher demonstrates. A great teacher inspires.” In the age of artificial intelligence, the teacher remains indispensable, but the average and good will find no place in it. Only the very good and great should work.

“Irreplaceable Teacher in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” is the second round table on strategic trends in world education held as part of the NIS 180th anniversary project dedicated to Ibrai Altynsarin.
